Day 3. {a home remedy?}

I lay in bed last night, and in between leg CRAMPS, my mind kept racing “What am I going to blog about for Day 3, and WHAT is going on with these restless legs!!??”  yep, I might be in trouble, 22 more days to go.

So, after HOURS of tossing and turning and trying to calm my legs, I finally gave in and got out of bed. (This was somewhere near 3:30 am!!)  I was tired and I was mad.

Remembering that a while back I heard about slipping a bar of Ivory Soap under your fitted sheets, supposedly cures leg cramps.  At this point, my legs hurt SO badly and I was SO tired, I logged on and did some research.

“They” say it really does work, although no one has determined HOW or WHY.  I know I am willing to try it.  Maybe it is mind over matter?  maybe I need some reinforcement from my blog readers that is DOES work?   I am headed to the store momentarily to get me some !!!!

Does anyone else know about this?  please tell me it works.  I . need . sleep .

So, at 3 am, two dilemmas were solved.  Research is done on this AND another day of blog material is also done.

Remember,  I enjoy being random.   🙂

Maybe tomorrow, we can get back to Christmas, if I get a good nights sleep tonight.

Stay tuned.

I don’t know about Ivory soap for restless legs, but I take a calcium pill with magnesium at bedtime, or whenever restless leg strikes and it stops it!! I wouldn’t be without calcium in the house! In my case-drinking soda can cause this b/c the phosphoric acid in soda robs the calcium from your system. If I don’t drink sodas, I don’t usually get restless leg. When I have been without calcium, drinking milk helped also.
    I hope this helps!

My hubby has an OTC pill that works in 10 minutes. Will check the medicine cabinet and let you know. It can be found on the bottom shelf at WalMart in a red box and is about $4-$5.

My husband gets severe leg cramps at night when hes been outside working all day in the heat or when laying floors/on his knees a lot.

Thanks!! I got the e mail, and depending how tonight goes, I may need to look into this. Who knows, I might sleep well tonight from sheer exhaustion!! LOL

  3. Katie@ The Baby Factory Says:

OOh. I will be curious to know if that works. I had mad leg cramps when I was pregnant. Mad, I tell you.
I blogged about the laundry soap today 🙂 You’ll have to check it out!

I will keep you posted on if it works or not. Now off to check out YOUR blog!!! I am so behind on my Google reader, it is nearly embarassing… 🙂

  4. Diana Says:

Yes, the Ivory soap does work, but found that eating more bananas does it too.
Yo9u should have called me last night, I was awake from 1 to 3:30. Don’t know why, just maddening, isn’t it?

    • simplyaltered Says:

Oh my……would you know, bananas??? I am sure I could not choke down a banana if I had to!!! I hate them. Might be as bad as sacraficing sleep!!! :O

  5. Sammie Jester Says:

Have not heard about Ivery soap but pickel juice works well. I know for a fact . you might want to eat a banana before bed. I think both have potasium in them.

    • simplyaltered Says:

ewwww..PICKLE juice??? I would definitely rather do without sleep. You will have to do a search for “pickles” on my blog and read THAT post!!! you will get a good laugh. 🙂 lol lol !!!!!

Kelli – Tyler battled leg cramps and he swore by the bar of ivory soap and I must say it did help but could never figure out how. It’s a bar of soap I still have and treasure.

    • simplyaltered Says:

now THAT is advise I will take to heart!!! thanks!!! I am sure at the point you were, also willing to try just about anything….even the craziest of home remedies!!! 😦

Okay, I read about this in August when I was googling a remedy for the itching of mosquito bites. For the bites you rub a bar of ivory soap over the bites and it takes the itchiness away for a while. A couple of nights later I had leg cramps, I took the bar of soap and did put it under the sheets and fell asleep. I’m not sure if it worked or if I just finally got tired and fell asleep. Will be interested to here your experience.

who knew so many things can be taken care of with Ivory soap!!! it was interesting, that the info I read specifically said other soaps could be heard EXCEPT Dial and one other kind (can’t remember) hmmmmm….that was interesting huh??

I sometimes suffer from not only leg cramps (which are the worst!) but also cramps running from my arms up & down into my side. NOT FUN! The nurse practitioner that I visited recently told me to try drinking 8 oz. of tonic water every day. I still need to remember to buy some & try it. Maybe it might work for you? I’ve heard about the Ivory Soap, but don’t know if it actually works.

I could easily drink Tonic water…..just not pickle juice. I will keep this in mind. Stay tuned and I will let everyone know if the soap worked for ME or not. Hope hope hope!!!!!

  9. Farmwife Says:

It just happens that I was in for a doctor visit today and talked about leg cramps. She suggested the tonic water also (with a little lemon or lime, not gin!) before bedtime. She said it may work because it contains quinine, a drug that used to be prescribed for leg cramps! While the drug has been pulled from the market, there is still some in the tonic water.

    • simplyaltered Says:

I will certainly have to add this to my method!!! the other choices of mustard, pickles , or bananas?? YUCK to all three!! Tonic water is very doable for me. 🙂

  10. carole martin browne Says:

I take a RX from my Doctor for Restless legs,it does help alot but I’m sure going to put the bar of soap under my sheets tonight also..And NO pickle juice for this girl,I’m with you I hate pickles and do not have them in my home,ever..Yuk..

    • simplyaltered Says:

Right on Carole!!! I remember your comment on my pickle phobia post!! that is too funny!!!! Sleep is NOT important enough to keep pickles anywhere near MY house!!!!!! LOL

  11. Cam Says:

I’m a nurse. I had a patient that swore by this! Please let me know if is helpful to you too. Thank you for sharing. I enjoy your blog! I use your laundry soap and am giving it as gifts for Christmas!

    • simplyaltered Says:

Thanks to YOU for following my blog!!! as you will see in my next post, YES YES YES this worked WONDERS for me!!! makes me anxious to go to bed again tonight!! 🙂

  12. LaVonne Bloem Says:

Yes it does work! I have told Kim to try it, and we did it too when we were both having trouble sleeping. I never knew you were having leg cramps or I would have insisted you try this earlier. Dr’s tell their patients to use it because it works, but they don’t know why. I have read alot about this subject.

    • simplyaltered Says:

Really? I did not know you knew about this. I wonder why Kim did not try it!!! it is a VERY cheap fix, so far atleast.

  13. Pam Taylor Says:

The night cramps are definitely annoying to say the least. I used an Rx with quinine when I was working but as one of the other bloggers said, that has been taken off the market….Hope the soap remedy works well, I have heard of it but not tried it. Would be interested in knowing the Walmart remedy. I have gone to a banana before going to bed. That helps. I couldn’t enjoy the tonic. Hope something other than the restless leg Rx works as the Rx make my sister nausious feeling if she doesn’t go to bed right away. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

    • simplyaltered Says:

I had never even heard of this Quinine until this posting. I wonder why it was taken off the market? But I know I can NOT choke down a banana, so the Ivory is going to have to work….and it DID , it DID, it DID !!!!!!
